ARTicipate 2017-18 Season Launched at the Shenkman Arts Centre

13 Ottawa area artists to exhibit and perform

Ottawa (Ontario) – AOE Arts Council, founder and steward of the ARTicipate Endowment Fund, is proud to announce the ARTicipate 2017-2018 Season of performances and exhibits at the Shenkman Arts Centre made possible by an ARTicipate Project Grant.

This year the ARTicipate Endowment Fund provided a total of $24 425 in grant money to 13 local artists and arts groups.  The season will make full use of the Shenkman Arts Centre’s professional and unique spaces, including the Harold-Shenkman Hall, Richcraft Theatre, Ottawa Citizen Dance Studio, Upper lobby, Minto Orléans Agora, LaLande + Doyle Exhibition Space and the Trinity Art Gallery.

“The impact of the ARTicipate Endowment Fund grant goes beyond fiscal assistance,” says Mark Stephenson, an Ottawa visual artist who received a grant for his exhibit Social Portraits. “This is my first gallery solo show representing three years of work and an incredible amount of growth in my artistic practice. This opportunity will allow me to see my vision through to the conclusion I always imagined.”

AOE Arts Council recognizes the difficulty that many in the arts encounter when searching for project funding; for this reason, the Arts Council created the ARTicipate Endowment Fund ten years ago. The ARTicipate Endowment Fund financially supports Ottawa artists and arts groups to showcase their work with the community at Shenkman Arts Centre. Since 2010 this annual grant has contributed positively towards new works, and collaboration at the Shenkman Arts Centre.

“The Articipate Endowment Fund enriches the programming offered to audiences at the Centre,” says Caroline Obeid, Shenkman Arts Centre’s Artistic Producer and Manager. “It enables access to performance and exhibition spaces to local artists who provide a broader range of cultural and artistic activities.”

To date, the ARTicipate Endowment Fund has awarded 128 grants through a jury-selection process to local artists and arts groups totaling $455 003**. Recipients can use this funding toward their rehearsal and production costs, to enhance their creative team, to create original work, or to support promotional efforts.

“ARTicipate funds will allow us to produce a high quality performance that will bring together musicians from similar cultural backgrounds but from different generations, as well as the audience and community,” says Miguel de Armas of MDA Productions. “These funds will also provide us the possibility to work with out of town artists in a collaborative way as well as with an artistic director who has a clear vision of how to create a show, engage the audience and tell a story about our Afro Cuban heritage and contributions to the ever-evolving music scene in Ottawa.”

The ARTicipate 2017-2018 Season, performers and exhibitors will cover everything from dance to film to visual and media art. This year, visitors will have the chance to see Gail Bourgeois, Mark Stephenson, Jessie Parker, and Marc Léger present their work at the Shenkman Arts Centre in solo shows for the first time. Ottawa residents will be able to enjoy the many performances and exhibits at the Shenkman Arts Centre from August 2017 to April 2018.
